Miri :Â Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad (SOPB) recently organised an eye-care project under its Vision Care programme at Rumah Sayun Galan, Sungai Arang, near here, where about 200 residents turned up to have their eyes checked for free.
In expressing his gratitude for the programme, longhouses chief, Sayun thanked SOPB for sponsoring all spectales and cataract surgeries for those with vision problems.
“The cataract surgeries are scheduled to be carried out on July 27, 2013 at Miri General Hospital,” he added.
The Vision Care Programme is the brainchild of a group of volunteers called ‘Caring Hearts, Caring Hands Group’, the Eye Clinic of Miri General Hospital and Yang Low Ophthalmic Optician.
Among those present at the event were SOPB’s group Plantation Controller, Mr Chua Kian Hong and SOPB’s Plantation Controller Mr Tay Ching.
The eye-care project is aimed at reducing the incidence of preventable blindness among residents of longhouses in Tinbarap area, especially children and the elderly.
At the same time, it is to help improve their health and quality of life.
Mr Chua also said the project helps the residents save cost on travelling to Miri for treatment.
“The project helps to lower treatment cost for the residents as early intervention is less expensive and more effective than attempting to rectify the problem later,” he added.
The Vision Care programme is one of SOPB’s Corporate Social Responsibility projects besides their yearly Young Achievers Awards, Students Adoption Programme, Education Outreach programme as well as Disaster Unit.
