MIRI, 20 OCT – Reinforcing its dedication to nurturing young talent and strengthening industry-academic ties, Sarawak Oil Palms (SOP) recently welcomed students from the Faculty of Business, Curtin University Malaysia for an academic industrial visitation.

The programme, held at Lambir Estate and Lambir Palm Oil Mill, gathered more than 25 students under the guidance of Dr Fayrene Chieng, a lecturer at the Faculty of Business, along with Dr Tanusree and Dr Ting Qian Hui.

During the visit, students were introduced to the operations of the palm oil industry through an engaging briefing conducted by SOP’s in-house engineer. This was followed by a guided mill tour, offering participants a close-up look at how fresh fruit bunches are processed into crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernels. The session allowed students to gain a practical understanding of the production process and the intricate systems involved in ensuring efficiency and quality at each stage.

SOP’s Head of Sustainability Department, Galau Melayong shared, “The visit offered students an invaluable opportunity to connect their academic studies with the practical aspects of the palm oil industry. Through the insightful sharing session and on-site tour, they were able to witness the end-to-end process of palm oil production and understand how various functions – from plantation management to milling operations – contribute to the industry’s value chain. The experience not only enhanced their learning but also broadened their awareness of sustainability practices and the vital role of innovation in the sector.”

SOP continues to champion educational engagements that bridge academic learning with practical industry exposure, preparing the next generation for future careers in the palm oil industry.
