Miri, 25 FEBSarawak Oil Palms Berhad (SOP) welcomed 19 students and 2 lecturers from the Department of Science and Technology, Faculty of Humanities, Management and Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS), for an academic industrial visit to Lambir Palm Oil Mill and SOP Academy. The visit formed part of the faculty’s initiative to expose students to real-world industrial operations, particularly those related to agricultural engineering and crop processing systems.

During the visit, students were introduced to the mill’s operational flow — from the reception of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) to the extraction and clarification processes involved in producing crude palm oil (CPO) and Palm Kernel (PK). SOP’s operational personnel shared insights into the technologies applied in modern milling, safety protocols, sustainability practices, and the importance of process efficiency in ensuring product quality.

Senior Mill Manager of Lambir Palm Oill Mill, Su Chung Liik, shared, “We are glad to support academic visits like this, as they allow students to observe firsthand technologies and operational standards that drive efficient and sustainable palm oil processing. We hope this exposure broadens their understanding of the industry.”

The visit enabled participants to connect classroom theories with real industrial applications, giving them clearer exposure to engineering principles used on the ground. By observing day-to-day processes and interacting with SOP personnel, students gained valuable perspectives on operational discipline, environmental compliance, and the technological innovations that support productivity in the palm oil value chain.

SOP remains committed to supporting academic engagement and strengthening collaboration with institutions of higher learning. Through initiatives such as this, the Group continues to contribute to talent development and promote better industry understanding among the next generation of agricultural and engineering professionals.
