BINTULU, 21 APRSarawak Oil Palms Berhad (SOP) welcomed 40 students and 2 lecturers from the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), for an academic industrial visit to SOP Bintulu Refinery as part of their academic engagement initiatives.

Led by SOP’s refinery personnel, the programme featured an in-depth briefing and an on-site walkthrough of the refinery’s facilities. The sessions successfully exposed the students to the operational flow of palm oil refining, including processing stages, operational standards and the quality assurance practices applied across the refinery.

The students were able to gain hands-on insights on how academic concepts translate into real-world industrial applications through the visit. Additionally, the participants were able to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between plantation activities and downstream processing efficiency, as well as the importance of compliance, consistency, and operational discipline within a large-scale industrial setting by observing refinery operations firsthand.

SOP Refinery Controller Operations Mr Kiu Kwong Chiang said, “The visit gave students a deeper understanding of downstream processing within the palm oil value chain, along with valuable exposure to industry practices. We look forward to supporting the next generation by becoming a learning hub within the industry.”
